Sometimes you can select different parts of an image (ie whole shirt) and fade it. Then burn and dodge to bring back the features you want.
Click and create nodes developing a path around your object.
(Click, hold and drag to create a curve.) Practice makes perfect.
If you get wierd shapes when you are working your way around the object, Option+Click (MAC) (PC should be similar) on the last node you drew to remove the arrow attached to it. (This makes it a lot easier to line up your next node.)
Once you almost finish going around the image you are masking, you will eventually end up at the first node you drew. Click in the first (start) node and it will close your path.
Go to the paths (in the Layers box). Double click on it to save path if you want to save it. Then, "Make Selection" from your path (in the Path drop down box)(Be sure to click on the path in the Path box to make it active before making it a Selection.)
You can then adjust your levels (Control + L) of your Selection or make a copy of your selected area as a new layer. (Make sure "Move Tool" is selected in your tool box, copy and paste and you will create a new layer.)
Hope all you PS newbs can try this out.
HINT: less is more....if you try to accentuate too much, it looks FAKE
